Applying the Principles of Advanced and Distributed Simulation to the Military Domain –
Training, Experimentation, and Support of Operations
Andreas Tolk, PhD
Senior Research Scientist
Virginia Modeling, Analysis & Simulation Center
Old Dominion University
Norfolk, VA 23529
This tutorial gives an overview of the state of the art of distributed simulation applications in the military domain to support training and education of forces in computer assisted exercises and tactical training using simulators, experimentation to evaluate necessary transformation of the forces with regard to effectiveness and efficiency, and the direct support of operations in current and future command and control systems. It includes a brief overview of applied standards (DIS, ALSP, HLA) and an overview on current research on composability, battle management language, and ontology driven interoperability.
Biography
Dr Andreas Tolk is a Senior Research Scientist at VMASC since Spring 2002. He has over 15 years of international experience in the domain of simulation applications in the military environment. He received his Ph.D. in 1995 the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich, and holds a German Diploma (M.S.) in Computer Science since 1988. After leaving the German Armed Forces, Dr. Tolk first joined ESG, one of the main German contractors for Command and Control Systems, where he worked as a program manager for Decision Support Tools, and afterwards went to IABG, the main supporter of the German DoD concerning military Operations Research, where he worked as Head of Department for Tactical Systems, Technical Advisor for R&D in C4ISR, and finally as Vice President for Land Weapon Systems. Dr. Tolk was one of the experts helping to write the NATO Modeling and Simulation Master Plan and participated in several NATO Studies. He also serves as Technical Evaluator for the annual NATO M&S Conference since 2003. He is an elected member of the Executive Committee (EXCOM) of the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO) and serves as vice chair of the M&S/Command and Control Services panel. He received several awards for his work on interoperability issues, especially integration issues of Command and Control systems and simulation systems for decision support, training in computer assisted exercises, as well as procurement and acquisition. He has published more than 80 papers and articles, several of them awarded by international organizations. He is teaching in the M&S curriculum of Old Dominion University and is a member of the international Body-of-Knowledge review committee for M&S.
