Mission
Parallel and Distributed Computing Centre (PDCC) is to form a centre of excellence in the areas of parallel and distributed computing; to carry out research where goals of the projects are connected to real concerns; and to enhance the research profile of the University by putting the name of the Lab on the international research map. In pursuit of its mission, PDCC strives to seek new industrial projects where parallel and distributed processing can provide a solution to real problems, to conduct leading edge research and advance knowledge, and to foster research collaborations both nationally and internationally.
Overview
PDCC (formerly Parallel & Distributed Processing Lab) was established in 1994. Since then, there have been numerous successful research projects and activities carried out. Faculty members at PDCC have graduated more than 70 PhD and research Master students. Many of them are now working with renowned universities, research institutes or companies (e.g., University of Birmingham, Microsoft, and Oracle).
Current research activities in PDCC can be broadly grouped into six interest areas from resource infrastructures, enabling technologies to applications of parallel and distributed computing: High Performance Computing; Grid & Cloud Computing; P2P Systems; Multi-Agent Systems; Collabortaive Technology and Applications; and Large-scale Discrete Event Simulation. Particularly, it has gained an international reputation for its research on distributed simulation, and has received seven best paper awards for this work at international conferences in recent years. In addition, PDCC has hosted three leading international conferences in Singapore: 6th IEEE Cluster Computing and the Grid (CCGrid 2006), 20th ACM/IEEE/SCS Principles of Advanced and Distributed Simulation (PADS 2006), 13th IEEE/ACM Distributed Simulation and Real Time Applications (DS-RT 2009).
PDCC has formed research partnerships with Griffith University (Australia), Polish Japanese Institute of Information Technology (Poland), University of Illinois Urbana Champaign (USA), Kahlsruhe University (USA), University of Texas at Austin (USA), Institute of High Performance Computing (Singapore), Hewlett Packard, and Sun Microsystems in the area of high performance computing and distributed computing and with Georgia Institute of Technology (USA), Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Brunel University (UK), University of Amsterdam (Netherlands), Singapore Institute of Manufacture Technology (SIMTech), Defense Science and Technology Agency (Singapore), and IBM T J Watson in the area of distributed simulation.
PDCC has excellent computing equipments and network infrastructure including a CPU/GPGPU cluster and several Linux clusters. In addition, there are approximately 70 PC/Workstations for use by graduate and undergraduate students. It also operates the Access Grid Conference Room with videoconferencing facilities.
