Cloud-Assisted Real-Time and Large-Scale Monitoring and Analysis for Water Quality
Description:
We propose to leverage advanced computer technologies to provide real-time and large-scale
monitoring and analysis for water quality. Water is our daily life necessity, and water quality
has become more and more important for public health and national security. Attacks may come
from anywhere and at any moment. Therefore, the requirement on real-time and large-scale monitoring and analysis is a key factor for water quality. We adopt two emerging and
complementary computer technologies, i.e., sensor networks and cloud computing. Sensor
networks mixed of wired and wireless sensors is deployed to monitor the different parameters in
a large water network in real time. Beyond sensing, sensors have intelligence to perform
preliminary processing on sensory data. Sensory data are sent to the cloud for storage and
execution. Users can perform monitoring and analysis tasks on the recent sensory data or on the
archival sensory data. We believe that combining the advantage of these two computer
technologies can strongly enhance the effectiveness of real-time monitoring and analysis on
water quality, and facilitate the scientists and officials to make correct steps on improving water quality.
Objectives:
The overall goal of this project is to provide a holistic computing platform in order to satisfy the
requirement on real-time and large-scale water quality monitoring and analysis. We embrace
three detailed objectives:
- To enhance the effectiveness of real-time monitoring with wireless sensor networks.
- To offer massive and reliable storage for storing large amount of sensory data for a long time so
as to assist the real-time monitoring and analysis on historical data.
- To provide friendly user interface to facilitate users to specify their pattern of interests, and
advanced data analysis algorithms are developed for finding the target patterns.
